According to the Korean Public Art Portal, approximately 24,000 works have been installed nationwide since 1994, and nearly 1,000 new public artworks are created every year. Of these, more than 80% are older works that were installed more than 10 years ago, and most of them suffer from poor management, which contradicts the purpose of artistically improving the urban environment and damages the city’s aesthetics. Except for some works directly managed by local governments, there are no records of the original forms. However, since the management status is not properly inspected, comprehensive management is needed.

The ARTWANA art management platform aims to systematically maintain and manage all public artworks, including architectural works and museum collections, while strengthening civil society participation and corporate partnerships. By effectively distributing public funds for the maintenance of artworks, we prioritize the preservation of these pieces and improve the urban environment. Through strategic partnerships, including sponsorships and advertising, we expand funding to sustain the city's artistic heritage and foster civic pride and corporate citizenship. Additionally, through two-way communication channels, we help citizens create the city’s artistic narrative, collaborate with the public, and enhance their understanding of public art. We work with citizens to enrich city life and improve cultural competency, ensuring that the beauty and role of public art in the urban landscape are maintained.

In March 2024, works that had been stored for decades were repaired and exhibited in the Total Museum of Art's storage and outdoors

From April to August 2024, 'The Vertical Village' (The Vertical Village 2012, located in Iljin Building, Mapo Station), a work by MVRDV, a global architectural design group from the Netherlands, was reinstalled on August 5, 2024, after completing a four-month repair process. This work was first exhibited at the Total Museum of Art in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul, and has now been moved to Iljin Building in Mapo-gu, Seoul. As a public art piece, Jonathan Borofsky's Hammering Man, standing in front of the Heungkuk Life Insurance headquarters in Sinmun-ro, is considered one of the best works of art and is loved by many citizens. MVRDV, who visited Korea in 2012 for this work, has gained global fame through active activities on the international stage over the past 10 years, making the work even more valuable

From August to October 2024, a sculpture by sculptor Tal Streeter (1934–2014, Oklahoma, U.S.) was preserved. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art houses a work called Dragon Stairs. He is also famous for his piece Eternal Smile, which symbolizes Hongik University. The sculpture had been left outdoors for a long time and required considerable repairs. Works installed outdoors and exposed to contamination and corrosion over long periods need more systematic maintenance.
